Ten candidates are fighting for the late Lindsey Graham’s Senate seat
South Carolina Republicans are heading to the polls to figure out who gets to fill the massive political void left in Washington.
When a longtime senator passes away, you usually get a quiet transition or a clear heir apparent. South Carolina decided to do the exact opposite by throwing ten different Republicans into a primary battle royale to replace Lindsey Graham.
Donald Trump pushed the governor to temporarily appoint Graham's sister, Darline Graham, and urged her to run for the full term. But she is hardly alone on the ballot. She is up against a wild mix of contenders, including former governor Mark Sanford, sitting congressmen, a biomedical engineer, and an actual farmer.
Unless someone manages to pull off a miracle and grab over fifty percent of the vote right away, the top two will have to do this all over again in a runoff. Nepotism and political nostalgia are going head-to-head with political revivals and local outsiders.
Filling big political shoes is tough, but watching ten people try to squeeze into the same pair at once is something else.
