Russia burns 975-year-old cathedral, gets hit back by drone swarm
A massive overnight bombardment hit apartment blocks and a historic sanctuary in Kyiv, but the latest shipment of US air defenses and a wave of retaliatory strikes changed the math entirely.
Overnight, Russia decided to drop a massive wave of missiles and drones on Ukraine. Among the targets was the Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv—a 975-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site. Because nothing says "military target" like a medieval church. Naturally, Moscow claimed it wasn't them, because of course they did.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv got hit with a double-tap strike, killing rescue workers who had just arrived to help. But the toll in Kyiv could have been way worse if not for a last-minute delivery of American Patriot air defense missiles. Zelensky basically said they used the very last of them to save the capital.
On the other side of the border, Ukraine fired back, sending drones deep into Russia, including Tula. It turns out air defense is a lot more stressful when both sides are playing.
Denying a strike on a medieval cathedral while one's own military hubs are buzzing with retaliatory drones is quite the geopolitical strategy.
