A light plane just rammed Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, Citic Tower

Original version ·

Nothing says "everything is fine" quite like a plane hitting a 109-story state-owned financial hub and the police immediately telling everyone to put their phones away.

So, a tiny, domestically made light sport plane took off from an airport east of Beijing. It was supposed to be a standard pilot training flight. Instead, it took a very weird detour and ended up smacked into the 65th floor of Citic Tower, also known as China Zun.

Naturally, the tail ended up on the sidewalk, debris started falling, and a nearby taxi got its window smashed. But instead of giving a quick update, the Chinese government went completely silent, and police on the scene immediately started ordering people not to take photos. Because as we all know, if there are no pictures on social media, did a plane even hit a skyscraper?

Ian Petchenik from Flightradar24 pointed out that the flight path was totally "out of character" for a training flight. This wasn't some minor drift; the plane flew miles off-course directly into the crown jewel of Citic Group, one of China's largest state-owned financial giants.

It is going to be incredibly awkward trying to explain how a student pilot "accidentally" targeted the country's financial core.

lol 'please don't take photos' is the most Chinese government response possible
+6 solidA cynical observation that perfectly captures the bureaucratic reflex to suppress reality with a polite request

A training plane hitting the 65th floor of the tallest tower in the city... yeah, 'out of character' is a massive understatement.
+4 solidPointing out the obvious absurdity of a 'training accident' in a high-security zone is the bare minimum of critical thinking

bruh how do you even miss a 100+ story skyscraper? it's literally right there
+1 jokeAsking how to miss a building is a classic display of internet-grade confusion, though hardly a revelation
