The Pentagon named the troops killed in Jordan as the peace deal dies
Well, that was fast. The fragile peace agreement between the US and Iran lasted about as long as a New Year's resolution, and now we’re back to trading nightly airstrikes while trying to process the loss of two very young soldiers.
They were 25 and 19. Just kids, basically, stationed in Jordan when an Iranian ballistic missile and drone strike hit their base. Tyler James Feehan from Hawaii and Isabella Gonzales from Texas became the first US casualties since the high-profile peace agreement was briefly met earlier this month.
Four other troops were injured, and another unnamed soldier was killed in Iraq just a day later. But instead of taking a step back, the military machine did exactly what it always does: it accelerated.
We have now traded airstrikes for nine consecutive nights. Donald Trump announced that the weekend retaliatory strikes were launched in 'honor' of the fallen, as if a few more explosions somehow balance the ledger.
Retaliation in the name of honor is a classic script, but it doesn't bring back teenagers from Texas.
