Federal judge says Pentagon can fire Stars and Stripes journalists

Original version ·

Turns out, you can't just tell the military to mind their own business and expect to keep your job.

So, three journalists over at Stars and Stripes—Max Lederer, Erik Slavin, and Lara Korte—found out the hard way that the Pentagon isn't exactly a fan of free speech in their own backyard. They got the boot after doing an interview where they basically said they work for the readers, not the brass.

They sued, thinking the First Amendment might have their back. A federal judge just ruled that since they were doing their jobs during the interview, the Pentagon can totally let them go. The judge even called it a 'cruel bait-and-switch' but decided that, legally speaking, the government is allowed to be that kind of cruel.

Apparently, the government considers 'independent journalism' a workplace grievance.
