A 7.7 earthquake just shook Panama and the canal is still standing
Things got pretty intense in Panama today when a massive quake hit, making even the famous canal cables dance.
When a 7.7 magnitude quake hits near Pitazola Arriba, you expect things to go sideways. Buildings in Panama City actually started crumbling, but the Panama Canal—a giant, vital piece of global plumbing—apparently just shrugged it off.
While the rest of the country was dealing with structural chaos, the canal kept operating like nothing happened. Residents were running into the streets and the USGS was busy logging over 40 aftershocks, but the big water highway stayed open for business.
President José Raúl Mulino is telling everyone to keep their cool while the government scrambles to send out aid. It is a miracle that no one was seriously hurt, considering the ground was literally rolling.
Nature threw a massive tantrum, but the infrastructure held up just enough to keep the ships moving.
