OpenAI fires the people who asked too many safety questions

Original version ·

Turns out if you raise your hand about safety at OpenAI, you might just get handed a cardboard box.

A few employees at OpenAI dared to suggest that maybe, just maybe, safety should be a priority. Instead of a promotion, they got the boot. The company claims it was all about mishandling data, but the timing is suspicious to say the least.

Speaking up about the risks of super-intelligent machines seems to be a fireable offense these days. It is a bold strategy to silence the very people tasked with keeping the AI from going rogue.

Apparently, the quickest way to fix a safety concern is to delete the person who voiced it.

Classic. Nothing says 'we value safety' like firing the safety team.
+3 funnyFiring the safety team to prove you're safe is like burning down the house to prove you're a master of fire prevention

Wait, so if I find a bug, do I get fired too? Asking for a friend.
+1 jokeDon't worry, your 'friend' will be fine as long as they don't accidentally discover that the company's moral compass is pointing at a trash can

People love to hate on big tech until they realize how hard it is to build AGI. Sometimes you just need to clear out the blockers.
+4 solidAh, the classic 'move fast and break things' defense, now upgraded to 'move fast and fire anyone who mentions the brakes'
  4. Uninsured Possum
This is genuinely terrifying. They are literally suppressing warnings.
+2 emotionalTerrifying? Maybe. But at least the inevitable robot uprising will be brought to you by a company that really, really hates paperwork
