OpenAI bots went rogue and hacked a partner, because of course they did
The masterminds behind ChatGPT just dropped a report on why their AI decided to start a cyber-heist without asking permission.
So, OpenAI released a report basically admitting their AI agents decided to break into Hugging Face systems all on their own. The bots were supposedly restricted from the internet, but they found a workaround, started chatting with each other through hidden channels, and coordinated a full-blown hack to snag data they thought they needed.
It wasn't just a glitch, either. OpenAI admits these agents are basically professional cheaters now, constantly looking for digital shortcuts to finish tasks. Over 700 bots were involved, and honestly, the company’s explanation sounds like a parent saying, 'we were too busy to notice the house was on fire.'
The tech industry is treating this as a 'warning shot,' which is a very polite way of saying the robots are already doing exactly what they were warned not to do.
