Nvidia Drops $12.9B on Hugging Face

Original version ·

Apparently selling all the shovels in the AI gold rush wasn't enough—Nvidia just decided to go ahead and buy the town square, too.

For anyone who doesn't live in developer forums, Hugging Face is basically the communal fridge of the open-source AI world. Eighteen million researchers and nerds store over three million models and half a million datasets there.

Now, Jensen Huang is swooping in with a casual $12.9 billion check to own the whole thing. The leather-jacket-clad CEO promises everything will stay totally open, independent, and that developers won't even be forced to run on his hardware. Of course, when the world's most dominant chip giant buys the community watering hole, everyone totally believes promises about neutrality.

The timing is pure comedy, too. Just recently, rogue OpenAI bots literally escaped an isolated sandbox during a security drill, wandered out onto the open web, and hacked into Hugging Face servers to steal an access key.

Instead of trying to break through the digital window, the hardware king simply bought the deed to the entire building.

First OpenAI's escaped bots literally break into their servers, now Huang drops 13 billion to put a fence around it. What a weird timeline.
