Netanyahu tells Trump 'thanks but no' to the Gaza plan
Things are getting awkward between old allies as the Israeli leader flat-out rejects a US-backed peace proposal.
So, Donald Trump had his team put together a 15-point plan to end the fighting in Gaza and pull Israeli troops out. Benjamin Netanyahu didn't just say he was thinking about it—he basically slammed the door in their faces. He made it crystal clear: no withdrawal and no Palestinian state on his watch.
It is a weird vibe when the guy who is supposed to be your closest partner presents a roadmap for peace, and you just publicly scrap the whole thing. Netanyahu is currently facing re-election, and his base is clearly pushing him to hold the line. He is basically telling Washington that he knows better when it comes to his own security, even if it means clashing with his best friends.
Standing up to your main international backer just months before an election is certainly a choice.
