Missouri Supreme Court Tells Politicians: Let the Voters Decide
In a move that caught Missouri officials off guard, the state's highest court just hit the brakes on a controversial plan to redraw congressional districts.
The state legislature really wanted to swap out their current maps for new ones that would essentially hand them an extra seat. They pushed it through, but citizens gathered over 300,000 signatures to put it to a vote. Denny Hoskins, the Secretary of State, tried to block it by claiming the constitution didn't allow for such a thing. He literally waited until an hour before the deadline to declare the petition dead in the water.
The Missouri Supreme Court finally stepped in and effectively told him he was wrong. They ruled that the referendum must go on the ballot, and the new map is officially on ice. Catherine Hanaway is already planning to appeal, and Donald Trump is calling the whole situation a disaster for justice.
When the people actually get a say in how their districts are drawn, the politicians start acting like the sky is falling.
