Meta finally tells teens to go to sleep

Original version ·

Instagram and Facebook are basically getting a curfew, because apparently self-control isn't an app feature.

So, Meta finally decided that maybe, just maybe, kids don't need to be doomscrolling through Instagram during algebra or at 3 AM. They’re rolling out updates that will effectively lock teens out of the apps during school hours and overnight.

It’s a wild concession for a company whose entire business model relies on keeping eyeballs glued to screens. They are essentially building their own 'stop' button, which is a massive pivot from the usual 'keep scrolling forever' strategy. Whether this actually solves the mental health spiral or just makes parents feel slightly better about handing over a smartphone remains the real question.

The irony of a tech giant forcing digital hygiene on minors while selling their attention to advertisers is not lost on anyone.
