Zuckerberg Just Dropped Meta’s Top AI Model for Free

Original version ·

Mark Zuckerberg is suddenly the biggest champion of open-source AI, and OpenAI probably isn't loving it.

Meta just released its flagship Muse Spark 1.2 model to the public for free, taking direct aim at closed rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. What makes this wild is that the original version was launched behind a strict paywall just a month ago, but now Zuckerberg is giving away the upgraded engine without charging a dime.

He didn't just drop the code and walk away. Zuckerberg framed the decision as a geopolitical necessity, arguing that heavy regulatory burdens in the U.S. are hobbling domestic labs while foreign rivals—especially fast-moving startups in China—pump out open-source models at record speed.

His core pitch is that hoarding AI power inside a couple of hyper-secret corporate vaults historically ends badly for everyone. To double down on the strategy, Meta is also rolling out Muse Glimmer, a lightweight family of open models engineered to run directly on standard consumer laptops.

It turns out the fastest way to frame undercutting every competitor's business model as a patriotic duty is having enough cash to hand out state-of-the-art tech for free.
