Emmanuel Macron shrugs off bomb blasts right outside his Damascus hotel

Original version ·

Emmanuel Macron just took "diplomatic chill" to a whole new level, carrying on with his meetings in Damascus like there weren't two bombs going off practically on his doorstep.

French President Emmanuel Macron was in Damascus to meet Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa. It was a historic moment—the first time an EU leader visited since Bashar al-Assad was ousted from power.

But Syria is still, well, Syria. While security forces were trying to defuse them, two improvised bombs detonated just 400 feet from Macron's hotel, injuring 18 people. One was hidden in a car, and the other was stuffed into a nearby trash can.

Instead of panicking and rushing to his plane, Macron apparently didn't even hear the explosions and went right ahead with his meeting at the presidential palace. He later hopped on social media to praise the dignity and courage of the Syrian people, completely unbothered by the morning's fireworks.

Talk about commitment to the bit—most people would check out of a hotel if the room service was slow, let alone if the trash cans outside started exploding.
