If you thought automatic license plate cameras were just taking photos of tags, tech company Leonardo has a fun twist. Their system, SignalTrace, pairs roadside plate scanners with sensors that log nearby Bluetooth and radio signals coming from phones, smartwatches, or car dashboards.
Here is how it works: carpooling to work every morning means a roadside camera captures the car tag while a sensor logs nearby wireless footprints. Over time, the software figures out that a specific phone and that car are attached at the hip. Even if the system does not pick up a legal name, it builds a recurring electronic signature that links a device to a specific car and its registered owner.
The company claims this does not violate privacy because it technically collects anonymous signals rather than names. But when investigators cross-reference that signal with registration records, home addresses, or recurring commute partners, that "anonymous" label becomes meaningless.
Anonymity in the digital age apparently just means officers have to do one extra click to match a device signal to a driver's name.
