Microsoft and Adobe get the green card cold shoulder
The feds just slapped a visa ban on some of the biggest names in tech and academia.
The Department of Labor is playing hardball, cutting off Microsoft, Adobe, and several massive tech consulting firms from sponsoring new green cards. The government claims these companies are using visa programs to replace American workers rather than finding them, and they are not buying the corporate defense that it is all about specialized talent.
It is not just the tech giants feeling the heat. A massive probe is also targeting universities like Harvard and MIT, with investigators essentially saying that having a fancy name on your diploma won't save you from a federal subpoena. The irony? Donald Trump is currently handing out science medals to Satya Nadella—who arrived in the country on a visa himself—at the very same time the administration is trying to shut the door behind him.
Big tech is learning the hard way that when the government decides to crack down on your hiring pipeline, your market cap doesn't make you bulletproof.
