Six-day funeral begins for slain Iranian leader Ali Khamenei

Original version ·

The Iran is throwing a massive, multi-city procession for its supreme leader, and things are just as chaotic as one would expect after a targeted US military strike.

The logistics alone are a nightmare. They are dragging the coffin through Tehran, then to the holy city of Qom, and then all the way to Iraq. The crowds are so massive that the authorities already had to scramble and change the funeral route on the fly.

But the real drama is who is not standing by the casket. Khamenei’s son and designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been completely missing from public view since the strike in late February. He was injured in the same attack that killed his family, and while his brothers are out there mourning, his empty chair is screaming volumes.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is using the moment to boast about "eviscerating" the Iranian military during his massive Fourth of July speeches. Unsurprisingly, peace talks between the United States and Iran have been put on a very awkward pause.

It is quite a choice to pause negotiations for a week-long funeral of a leader the other party just vaporized.
