Judge ends protection for 350k Haitians while State Dept says don't go to Haiti
The legal shield for hundreds of thousands of Haitian immigrants in the US just completely collapsed, and official government logic here is next level.
A federal judge had to throw out her own order protecting around 350,000 legal Haitian residents from deportation. Why? Because the Supreme Court decided lower courts don't actually have the authority to stop DHS from ending Temporary Protected Status.
So now, hundreds of thousands of law-abiding people who fled violence and disasters just lost their legal right to work overnight.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin made it very clear that officials are actively going after them, offering a choice between "self-deporting" or being arrested and forced out.
The wild part is that the State Department currently maintains a strict Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Haiti due to rampant kidnapping, gang violence, and terrorism. Apparently, the country is far too dangerous for Americans to set foot in, but completely fine to ship 350,000 people back to.
The federal government effectively declared an entire country unfit for human visitation while simultaneously organizing mass flights there.
