Judge Tells Trump Admin to Chill on Mail-In Voting Rules
A federal judge just hit the brakes on new USPS rules that would have turned election season into a chaotic mess for states.
So, a federal judge decided that forcing a major overhaul of mail-in voting procedures right before the midterms is, you know, a bad idea. The Trump administration tried to push a new USPS rule requiring states to jump through fresh hoops to verify ballots, but the judge basically said that’s practically impossible to pull off on such short notice.
States have already printed their ballots and set up their systems. Trying to change the rules now would just mean massive confusion and a whole lot of voters getting locked out. The judge pointed out that no one has the time or the cash to redesign the entire process while the clock is ticking down to election day.
The administration is likely going to appeal, because of course they are. It’s a classic case of election-year brinkmanship where the bureaucracy is being used as a weapon, and the courts are currently playing referee.
The irony of a system being protected by the very courts Trump spent years trying to staff is not lost on anyone.
