Judge Tells USPS To Keep Its Hands Off Ballots

Original version ·

Turns out the federal mail system can't just decide to hold your vote hostage based on a whim from the top.

A federal judge just put a stop to a wild plan from the USPS. They were considering a policy to stop delivering mail-in ballots unless states handed over their entire voter registry to the feds. Basically, the plan was to hold democracy for ransom until states gave up their private voter data.

It is worth noting that Donald Trump had pushed for stricter rules on how the mail service operates during elections. The judge wasn't having any of it, effectively telling the agency to stick to delivering letters and packages rather than playing political gatekeeper.

Apparently, the mail is supposed to just be the mail, not a tool for federal data collection.
