Mike Johnson is begging Donald Trump to sign the housing bill

Original version ·

Speaker Mike Johnson is sending a massive, bipartisan housing bill back to Donald Trump’s desk on Monday, cheerfully praying that the president won't throw another tantrum over it.

So, Congress actually did something. They passed a massive, bipartisan bill called the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to try and cool down the insane housing market and stop corporate landlords from buying up every single starter home. It passed with ridiculously high margins—we are talking 358-32 in the House.

But last week, Trump threw a wrench in the gears. He canceled the signing ceremony because he was mad about an unrelated voting bill that doesn't even have the votes to pass. He basically held affordable housing hostage for a pet political grievance.

Now, Mike Johnson is playing the ultimate hype man. He went on Fox News to declare he is sending it right back anyway, practically pleading with the boss to scribble that "big Trump signature proudly" on it so they can claim a win. Meanwhile, some Democrats are betting Trump still won't sign it because, well, none of his rich friends are struggling to pay rent.

Holding a massively popular, bipartisan housing relief bill hostage over unrelated voting laws is certainly a bold strategy for a populist president.

It turns out that getting a roof over people's heads is still secondary to securing political leverage on television.
