Italy cancels US trip after Trump photo claim
International diplomacy has officially devolved into high school cafeteria drama, and yes, it is entirely over a photo op.
It all started when Donald Trump boasted on television that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni practically begged him for a photo at the G7 summit. According to him, he felt sorry for her and generously obliged, assuming she was just thrilled he even spoke to her.
But Meloni wasn't having it. She went straight to Instagram to set the record straight, calling the story completely fabricated and pointing out that neither she nor her country ever beg for anything. To prove they aren't playing around, her foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, packed up his bags and canceled his scheduled trip to Washington entirely.
The wild part is that diplomatic relations between major Western allies are now actively deraililng over who wanted a selfie with whom. What makes it even more awkward is that Meloni was actually the only European leader to attend Trump's inauguration last year. However, their relationship cooled after she criticized his approach to international conflicts and called him out for being too accommodating toward the West's actual enemies.
It turns out the hardest part of modern global alliances isn't managing trade tariffs or military treaties, but navigating the extremely fragile egos of world leaders.
