No, Israel is not leaving South Lebanon anytime soon

Original version ·

So much for those easy peace deals. Israel’s new ambassador to the US just made it very clear that despite all the talk of fresh agreements, their troops are staying put.

Remember that "historic" peace deal the Trump administration has been hyping up with Iran? Yeah, well, someone forgot to CC the Israelis.

On NPR, host Steve Inskeep asked the new Israeli ambassador, Michael Leiter, about how this grand peace plan fits with reality on the ground. Leiter didn't mince words. He outright declared that Israel is not going to withdraw from South Lebanon.

It turns out, declaring peace on social media doesn't instantly dissolve decades of border conflicts. While the politicians in Washington are busy taking victory laps, the military on the ground has zero intention of packing up their gear and heading home.

Apparently, "peace in our time" translates to keeping the buffer zone indefinitely.
