Israel and Hezbollah Just Blew Up Trump's 'Beautiful' Peace Plan
While diplomats were packing their bags for a cozy Swiss summit, southern Lebanon turned into a massive fireball, proving once again that Middle East peace agreements have the shelf life of open milk.
Overnight, Israel launched some of its heaviest airstrikes in months on southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah fighters laid in wait to hit tanks and target troops. It was a massive, bloody mess that left dozens dead and injured on both sides.
The timing could not have been more awkward. Just as diplomats were preparing to kick off highly anticipated peace talks in Switzerland, the entire summit was abruptly canceled. This happened only a day after Trump bragged about a 'complete cease-fire' where negotiations would 'beautifully unfold.' Well, they folded alright, just not beautifully.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly announced that troops would stay put for as long as necessary. Meanwhile, his far-right Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, went full supervillain, declaring that 'all of Lebanon must burn' and demanding a thousand Lebanese tears for every Israeli one.
That is when US Vice President JD Vance decided to drop a heavy reality check. He essentially told the Israeli cabinet to wake up and remember that their entire high-tech defense budget is paid for by American taxpayers, suggesting it is probably a bad idea to bite the only hand left feeding them.
It turns out that manifesting peace in the Middle East requires slightly more than just posting nice adjectives on social media.
