Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz right after JD Vance says it's open

Original version ·

If you ever feel like your timing is terrible, just remember the US Vice President went on national TV to brag about a major global shipping lane being open, literally moments before Iran shut it right back down.

So, there was this grand peace plan between the US and Iran. The deal was simple: stop the fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon. But after a wave of Israeli airstrikes hit Lebanon, Iran decided the deal was officially breached.

In response, they did what they always do when they want to grab the world by the throat: they closed the Strait of Hormuz to shipping yet again.

The comedy here is all in the timing. Just as Iran was pulling the plug, Vice President JD Vance was on Fox News doing a victory lap. He literally told the nation that the strait was wide open and millions of barrels of oil were flowing through, proving the administration's high priority had been achieved. Meanwhile, the military's actual shipping data showed that traffic in the strait had already tanked to less than half of its normal daily average.

Now, everyone is pack-pedaling and flying to Switzerland for emergency talks to salvage whatever is left of this delicate diplomatic dance.

Nothing says stable global energy security quite like a critical trade bottleneck that gets toggled on and off like a living room light switch.
