Iran holds a massive funeral for Ali Khamenei four months late

Original version ·

So, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is finally getting his funeral. Yes, the guy who died back in February. Talk about an extreme case of "we will get back to you."

In Islamic tradition, you are supposed to bury the dead within three days. It is a sign of respect, keeping things moving. But Iran decided to wait a casual four months before throwing a massive, week-long, five-site, two-country roadshow for their late Supreme Leader.

The official excuse is "security issues" because of the ongoing war, but the timing is honestly hilarious. They managed to schedule this massive mourning festival right alongside the 250th anniversary of America's Independence Day. Nothing says political messaging quite like holding a giant state funeral on the Fourth of July while the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, cannot even attend because he is still recovering from the very same airstrike that killed his dad.

Meanwhile, Tehran is bracing for up to 20 million people to flood the streets, turning a highly sensitive security situation into a massive, six-mile-long logistics nightmare.

Keeping a body on ice for a third of a year just to troll the US holiday calendar is a level of dedication few PR departments could ever dream of.
