Huckabee Calls Settler Attacks 'Acts of Terror'

Original version ·

Watching an ultraconservative envoy call out violence in the West Bank by its actual name was definitely not on the diplomatic bingo card.

Mike Huckabee traveled out to the West Bank town of Turmus Aya to talk with local Palestinian Americans, and he did not mince words. Torching cars, vandalizing homes, and grabbing property isn't a zoning clash or petty vandalism — it is, in his direct words, an "act of terror."

Coming from a staunchly pro-settler Republican, calling extremist settlers "terrorists" caught almost everyone off guard. He admitted he took flak back home for using the word, but stood his ground, arguing that terror is literally using intimidation to make families terrified to let their kids step outside.

Still, the town hall left folks on the ground pretty numb. A diplomatic speech feels great on camera, but words don't fix torched roofs when the perpetrators simply walk away without handcuffs.

Acknowledging reality out loud turned out to be remarkably easy, but enforcing any real accountability remains as impossible as ever.
