Hamas Finally Fills Its Deadliest Job Opening
After leaving the hot seat vacant for nearly two years because, well, the previous guys got obliterated, Hamas has finally picked a new boss. Welcome to the worst C-suite role on Earth.
The gig goes to Khalil al-Hayya, a 65-year-old who apparently looked at the survival rate of his predecessors and said, "Yeah, sign me up." He beat out Khaled Meshal for the honor of being the next target on Israel's speed dial.
To be fair, al-Hayya has some remote-work leverage here. He actually left Gaza before the war started and has been living in exile, running cease-fire negotiations from comfortable hotel rooms in Qatar and Egypt. It is a lot easier to talk tough when you are not actively dodging airstrikes, though he did survive one last year that wiped out several other commanders and his own son.
The top job has been cursed for a while. First, Ismail Haniyeh got taken out in Tehran. Then Yahya Sinwar took over and lasted just long enough to get cornered in Gaza.
Taking a job where the onboarding package includes a lifetime supply of luck and an inevitable drone strike takes a special kind of confidence.
