Alternative for Germany is surging in regional polls

Original version ·

Germany just hit a political nerve that nobody was prepared to touch.

So, the exit polls from the regional elections in Germany are in, and it’s a massive wake-up call. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has grabbed a serious lead. We are talking about the first time a far-right party has had this much influence since WWII.

Nobody actually knows if they can form a government though. The other parties have a long-standing pact to keep them out of power, so even with the most votes, they might end up frozen out of the actual decision-making room. It’s basically a massive game of political musical chairs where the winner might get blocked from sitting down.

It turns out that winning the popular vote is only half the battle when the rest of the establishment is dead set on keeping the doors locked.
