Federal Prisons: Where Your Complaints Go to Die
Turns out the official system for reporting abuse or medical neglect in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities is basically a paper shredder.
When you are locked up, you are supposed to have the right to speak up when things go sideways. From guards acting out to serious medical issues, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has a whole grievance process meant to handle complaints. Except, according to new data from The Marshall Project and NPR, it is mostly a performative exercise.
The vast majority of these grievances are simply tossed into the void. It is not that they are all unfounded; the system is just designed to ensure that very little actually happens once a complaint is filed. If you were looking for accountability, you are looking in the wrong place.
The administrative process effectively functions as a wall designed to keep the status quo firmly in place.
