FBI says crime hit a historic low, but Trump is taking all the credit

Original version ·

Turns out 2025 was the safest year in a long time for the US, at least if you believe the numbers coming out of the federal agency.

According to the FBI, violent crime plummeted in 2025, reaching levels we haven't seen since the mid-fifties. We’re talking about an 18% drop in murders and a massive decline in robberies. It’s the biggest year-to-year improvement since record-keeping began nearly a century ago.

Naturally, Kash Patel and Donald Trump are tripping over themselves to claim the trophy. Trump credits his immigration crackdowns and his "back the blue" stance for the turn-around, even while claiming the country is still supposedly flooded with dangerous people. It’s a classic political flex: celebrate the data when it’s good, and blame the boogeyman even when the charts say everything is trending in the right direction.

The numbers look great on a slide deck, but everyone is still going to fight over who actually pushed the buttons to make them happen.

Wait, so the country is both being invaded by millions of criminals and having its safest year ever? Make it make sense.
