EU forces Meta to let AI bots into WhatsApp for free

Original version ·

Brussels is officially telling Mark Zuckerberg to open his playground to the competition, whether he likes it or not.

The European Commission is tired of Meta acting like the bouncer at the coolest club in town. They’ve ordered the company to let rival AI chatbots roam freely inside WhatsApp again. Apparently, keeping the front door locked to competitors while you’re under antitrust investigation is a big no-no in Brussels.

Meta tried to start charging these AI companies for the privilege, but the regulators weren't buying it. They’ve essentially told Zuckerberg to keep the lights on and the doors open for everyone until they finish their probe. The commission is terrified that if they don't force access now, Meta will just bake its own AI into our pockets before anyone else gets a fair shot.

Meta is throwing a fit, calling it regulatory overreach and pointing out that they’re already dealing with massive fines. It’s a classic showdown between a platform that wants to own the ecosystem and a regulator trying to keep the playing field level.

It’s wild that a multi-billion dollar company is being ordered to provide free real estate to its biggest rivals just to keep the bureaucrats happy.
