Nine dead in Erie as another neighborhood turns into a crime scene

Original version ·

Another quiet Friday evening in small-town America, and another residential street taped off before dinner was even cold.

A gunman opened fire in the open street, walked straight into a house, and kept shooting. By the time police responded to an automated gunshot detector alert, nine people were already dead, including two young children, and the shooter had turned the gun on himself.

Officers arrived to find two women dead on the pavement and the rest inside the home. Governor Josh Shapiro took to X with the customary prayers and condolences, while detectives admitted they are still struggling to find any coherent explanation for what sparked it.

Acoustic surveillance systems can detect gunfire and alert dispatchers down to the millisecond, but technology has yet to find a way to outrun human malice.
