DoorDash is swallowing Instacart for $17B—your dinner just got pricier

Original version ·

It looks like your taco delivery and your weekly grocery run are about to live under the exact same corporate roof.

So, the delivery giants are finally hooking up. DoorDash just announced it is buying Instacart for a massive $17 billion. Apparently, we are entering the era of the "one-stop shop" for everything you are too lazy to pick up yourself.

Tony Xu, the DoorDash CEO, keeps talking about the delicate art of picking the perfect avocado, but let's be real: this is about cornering the market. They are essentially combining the two biggest players in food and grocery delivery, giving them a stranglehold on your front door. Naturally, the FTC is already squinting at this, and critics are screaming about higher fees and even worse pay for the drivers.

It is worth noting that this all comes while the FTC is literally investigating these same companies for those shady "personalized pricing" algorithms they use to squeeze every extra cent out of your wallet.

Competition is apparently so last decade that companies just buy it instead.
