Over 200 lost as another boat sinks off Djibouti

Original version ·

The math of human desperation is getting grimmer, and the world is just watching.

A boat packed with 305 people headed toward Yemen simply vanished into the sea near the Bab al-Mandeb strait. More than half of the people on board are dead or missing, including at least 15 children.

Nobody squeezes onto a rickety boat in the middle of the night unless they genuinely believe it is safer than staying put. Amy Pope, the head of the International Organization for Migration, is once again shouting into the void, asking governments to finally provide legal paths so people stop dying in the ocean.

Apparently, becoming a statistic is the only way to get a headline these days.
