DHS chief Markwayne Mullin threatens election officials with prison
Just when you thought election season couldn't get any wilder, the feds are now threatening local officials with actual jail time if they don't hunt down "ghost voters."
The DHS is bringing "maximum pressure" to the table. Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced they are going to scrub election records looking for noncitizens and dead people voting. And if local election officials don't play along? They might get slapped with fines, penalties, or a ticket straight to federal prison.
This comes right after Donald Trump gave a speech repeating claims about rigged elections. The administration claims they found over 250,000 noncitizens registered across four states, though they haven't actually accused any of them of casting ballots.
Local officials are not amused. They point out that voting machines aren't even connected to the internet, and noncitizen voting is practically nonexistent. It feels less like security and more like trying to stir up some pre-election chaos.
Threatening to jail the people who run the voting booths is certainly one way to build trust in the democratic process.
