Denver is suing to keep ICE away from the ballot box
Apparently, the administration thinks polling stations might need a little extra federal muscle this November.
Denver and a few advocacy groups just filed a lawsuit to make sure ICE agents stay far away from where people vote. The whole point of the legal fight is to keep federal officers from turning polling places into impromptu detainment zones.
There is actually a law from the Civil War era that says federal agents can't show up at election sites unless they are literally fighting off an armed invasion. The administration hasn't exactly ruled out sending agents to polling places, claiming they might just be there for 'threats' or specific warrants. It’s a bold strategy to show up with tactical gear while people are just trying to cast a ballot.
The government thinks it's a security measure, while local officials think it's a textbook case of voter intimidation. Turns out, the right to vote is a lot harder to exercise when someone with handcuffs is standing at the door.
