Establishment Democrats get a brutal reality check in Colorado
Denver voters just sent a very clear message to politicians who have been in office since the nineties: time is up, and nobody is waiting around anymore.
Let's talk about Diana DeGette. She’s been representing Denver in Congress since 1996. Back when the Macarena was the top song and DVD players were a brand new luxury item. Enter Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist lawyer who wasn't even walking when her opponent first took office.
And guess what? Kiros absolutely wrecked the establishment playbook, snatching over 51% of the vote. Her campaign wasn't about polite policy tweaks; she wants to abolish ICE, stop corporate money, and end military aid to Israel.
But she wasn't the only one raising hell. In the governor's race, Attorney General Phil Weiser easily beat the establishment favorite, Senator Michael Bennet. Even Senator John Hickenlooper barely survived a primary challenge from a progressive state senator.
Turns out, telling voters "we've always done it this way" works great, until the voters decide "this way" is exactly what needs to go.
