Chad Bails on the ICC Right After the U.S. Asked Nicely
Turns out all it takes to leave an international court is one polite phone call from Washington.
The U.S. isn't even a member of the ICC, but that didn't stop Washington from launching a campaign to dismantle it. The trigger? The court dared to issue arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant over war crimes allegations in Gaza.
So Marco Rubio's team started making calls. A senior American diplomat phoned Chad's foreign minister, Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, politely requesting that they reconsider their membership. Four days later, Chad officially submitted its resignation. They publicly cited anti-African bias as the reason, which was certainly convenient timing right after the call.
They aren't the only ones heading for the exit either. Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have all recently filed their paperwork to walk away.
Global justice works great right up until someone actually tries to enforce it.
