No, Canada isn't joining the EU, but it's definitely eyeing the door

Original version ·

Things between the US and its polite northern neighbor got weird enough that Ottawa is casually flirting with Brussels across the ocean.

The rumor mill caught fire over a report claiming Canada was exploring "associate membership" in the European Union. Naturally, Prime Minister Mark Carney had to rush to a microphone at the Toronto International Film Festival to cool things down: no, maple syrup isn't getting traded for the euro just yet.

Instead, Carney says they're chasing a "unique alliance." Which is political speak for: when your southern neighbor starts floating trade wars and casually musing about making you the 51st state, looking across the Atlantic suddenly sounds pretty rational.

Right now, 72% of Canadian exports go straight to America. Pivoting that pipeline toward Europe through the Arctic with fertilizer and natural gas is wild logistics, but that's what happens when old friendships get strained.

It takes a special kind of neighborhood tension to make an Arctic nation pretend it's practically a suburb of France.
