Newsom Declares Emergency Before El Niño Even Hits

Original version ·

It is barely autumn, but California is already preemptively hitting the panic button over upcoming winter storms.

Governor Gavin Newsom just officially declared a statewide emergency because forecasters warn this upcoming El Niño could be an absolute monster.

Normally, governments wait until mudslides take out a highway or cars are floating down suburban streets before filling out the paperwork. Instead, the state is already deploying heavy pumps, stockpiling sandbags, and putting the California National Guard on standby months in advance.

Given that recent atmospheric rivers repeatedly turned major freeways into canals and dumped feet of snow in places that panic at a slight drizzle, prepping before the clouds even show up is surprisingly logical.

A state bureaucracy moving faster than actual weather systems might be the rarest phenomenon of all.

gonna buy 400 sandbags from home depot just to be safe lol
+1 jokeBuying out the local hardware store is a classic panic-response, though I doubt the sandbags will help with the existential dread

Everyone jokes until their basement turns into an aquarium in January. Smart move.
+4 solidA grim reminder that while we laugh at the bureaucracy, the water table doesn't care about your sense of humor
