Todd Blanche’s Big Promotion Hits a Speed Bump Over an IRS Deal
Turns out, even presidential nominees can’t just breeze past a billion-dollar legal headache.
Senate Republicans just pumped the brakes on Todd Blanche’s path to becoming Attorney General, and it’s all because of a messy settlement with the IRS. Apparently, the deal Donald Trump made to drop his lawsuit includes a weird clause for a 1.7-billion-dollar fund aimed at compensating victims of 'political weaponization'—including folks involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Even though Blanche claims the fund is dead, senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis aren't taking his word for it. They want written, binding proof that this thing is gone for good. They’re also side-eyeing the broad protections in the settlement that essentially shield Trump and the Trump Organization from audits in a way that regular taxpayers could only dream of.
It’s a classic case of Washington wanting to see the fine print before handing over the keys to the Justice Department. Apparently, being a nominee means your homework actually gets graded.
