Binance just lost $6.3 billion to a laptop and a dream

Original version ·

Turns out the world's biggest crypto exchange can be brought down by a single compromised work laptop.

So, the crypto giant Binance is having a really bad week. Someone managed to walk off with $6.3 billion in what is easily the biggest heist in history. And how did they pull it off? It looks like a single DevOps engineer’s laptop got compromised, giving hackers a back door straight into the vault.

The finger is pointing at TraderTraitor, a crew linked to North Korea. They didn't just take the money; they did it in two massive waves over just a few hours. Binance is scrambling to freeze what they can, but a good chunk of that cash is likely already moving toward financing some very questionable state programs.

It’s wild that an entire global financial pillar can be rattled because one person accidentally clicked the wrong thing on their work computer.
