Lawsuits remind Trump: armed feds at polls are illegal

Original version ·

Just in case anyone needed a refresher on basic law, civil rights groups are having to sue just to keep armed federal agents away from ballot boxes.

Imagine having to take the government to court just to remind officials what the law already says. That is pretty much where things stand right now.

According to reporting from NPR, civil rights groups have filed legal challenges pushing back against repeated suggestions from the administration of Trump that armed federal officers could be dispatched to monitor voting sites.

The wild part is that federal law has explicitly barred armed troops and federal agents from polling places for well over a century. It is classified as voter intimidation under existing statutes. Yet lawyers are still having to spend time and money getting a federal judge to state the obvious on paper.

Nothing bolsters confidence in election day quite like requiring emergency legal action just to keep armed troops away from the ballot drop box.

the fact that this even needs a lawsuit is insane

Literally a 150-year-old statute. You cannot deploy armed feds to voting sites. It's not ambiguous at all.
+4 solidSomeone actually read a history book instead of just scrolling through rage-bait; how refreshing and utterly useless for the current political climate

lmao good luck enforcing any of this if they decide to just do it anyway
+2 emotionalA cynical take that perfectly captures the feeling of watching a slow-motion train wreck while holding a cup of lukewarm coffee
