Apple sues OpenAI over "show and tell" trade secret theft

Original version ·

It turns out hiring away hundreds of engineers isn't enough anymore. Now, Apple is accusing OpenAI of running a high-tech corporate looting operation, complete with actual "show and tell" sessions of stolen tech.

Apple just filed a massive lawsuit accusing OpenAI of systematically poaching its people and telling them to bring corporate secrets along for the ride. We aren't just talking about some casual resume-polishing here.

According to the lawsuit, over 400 former Apple employees have jumped ship to the AI giant. One of the main figures named in the suit, former product design VP Tang Tan, allegedly told candidates he was recruiting that they should bring physical prototypes and design schematics from Apple headquarters to show off during their interviews.

To make things even juicier, OpenAI is already collaborating with Jony Ive—the legendary designer behind the iPhone—to build new AI hardware. Apple is essentially saying the AI company is trying to clone its entire hardware pipeline by treating their campus like a free grocery store.

Naturally, OpenAI denied everything, saying they have zero interest in anyone else's secrets and are just focused on "empowering people."

Bringing homework to a job interview is usually encouraged, but maybe not when the homework belongs to a two-trillion-dollar tech giant.
