Apple Teams Up with Intel for US Chips Because Taiwan is Getting Too Expensive
Looks like Apple is finally learning that "designed in California" doesn't mean much when the actual hardware is priced out of this world.
Remember when Apple broke up with Intel to make its own super-cool silicon? Well, awkward reunion time. Donald Trump just announced that Apple is partnering with Intel to design chips right here in the US.
Why the sudden change of heart? Because Tim Cook admitted that making everything in Taiwan is becoming "unsustainable" and price hikes are basically unavoidable. Meanwhile, the US government bought a 10% stake in Intel last year for a casual $8.9 billion.
So, Uncle Sam basically bought a chunk of the factory, and now Apple is crawling back to its ex to save a few bucks on manufacturing. Intel stock immediately shot up 9% on the news.
It turns out the ultimate cure for corporate pride is a massive supply-chain headache and a multi-billion-dollar government bailout.
