Apple and Google officially rename Lake Ontario to Lake America
Geopolitics just hit your smartphone maps because apparently, geography is now a suggestion.
So, the tech giants Apple and Google finally gave in to pressure from Donald Trump and updated their maps. If you are in the U.S., Lake Ontario is now officially Lake America on your phone screen.
The whole thing started after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa went sideways. Trump basically called up the tech companies and told them to change the map to show who is really in charge. While Google and Apple are happy to play along for their domestic users, the rest of the world still sees the actual name. It is the same move they pulled with the Gulf of Mexico last year, which is now the Gulf of America in the U.S. app versions.
Meanwhile, the local authorities in Ontario are trying to fight back with giant billboards, and indigenous groups are calling the whole thing a bizarre attempt to erase history. It turns out that reality is just another software update now.
