Pentagon vs. Anthropic: The AI 'Safety' Breakup Just Got Legal
Turns out, telling the military you won't help build autonomous weapons is a great way to get blacklisted as a national security threat.
So, the Pentagon and Anthropic are officially over. A federal appeals court just ruled that the government can basically label any company a security risk if it doesn't play ball with the defense agenda. The whole mess started because Anthropic decided its Claude AI shouldn't be used for mass surveillance or robot weapons, and the Pentagon... really didn't like being told no.
Even though the judges admitted Anthropic isn't exactly acting like a villain, they ruled that the government doesn't actually need proof of 'bad intent' to pull the plug. Basically, if the government wants full control over your tech and you refuse to give it, you can be treated like a foreign adversary. Dario Amodei and his team are pretty much out in the cold while the White House celebrates taking down a 'traitorous' AI.
Being too ethical for the military is apparently a high-level national security liability.
