Samuel Alito finally decides to sit out a climate case

Original version ·

After holding stocks in two dozen energy firms, the Supreme Court justice finally realized maybe he shouldn't rule on big oil.

So, Samuel Alito just bowed out of a massive climate case involving Suncor and ExxonMobil. It only took him a while, but the math finally settled in: maybe presiding over a case that could impact the two dozen energy companies in your personal portfolio isn't the best look.

The case is about whether communities can sue oil giants for climate damages. While he doesn't own stock in those two specific names, the ruling could set a precedent that shakes up the entire energy sector—the one he is heavily invested in. It’s a classic case of better late than never, or perhaps just better late than having to explain yourself.

Justice is blind, but apparently, its portfolio has twenty-twenty vision.
