TechUK promised thousands of AI jobs—spoiler: the robots took them all
Turns out the massive employment boom from AI data centers is mostly just a glitch in the math.
Big tech lobbyists at TechUK have been selling us a dream: build a bunch of massive data centers, and watch the local economy explode with thousands of new jobs. Well, a new report from the researchers at Verdant just checked the math, and it turns out the reality is about 75% less impressive than the brochure.
The issue? These data centers are basically giant, humming robot houses. They don't need armies of people to run them; they just need electricity and maintenance crews. While the industry promised over 40,000 jobs, the current projects are barely tracking for 10,000. It turns out that for every megawatt of power these things guzzle, the actual human headcount is laughably small.
The dream of a tech-led job surge is starting to look a lot like a fancy way to build expensive hardware that doesn't actually employ anyone. Sometimes the future arrives, and it turns out the only person invited to the party is a server rack.
